Trail in Hahamongna

The Friends of Hahamongna is an advocacy group working together for the protection of Hahamongna Watershed Park, one of Pasadena’s last great open spaces.

Our members, from Pasadena, Altadena, La Canada and surrounding communities, are united in our support of this environmental treasure.  We have attended hundreds of meetings over the past decade monitoring Pasadena’s master planning process for the park and have amassed extensive document collections.  We have hired legal assistance as necessary to advocate for the park.

In 2005, the Friends of Hahamongna worked with the Metropolitan Water District Board of Directors to craft an open space easement for the Hahamongna Annex.  The 30 acre property, purchased by Pasadena from MWD, is now protected in perpetuity by this easement which allows only open space and recreational uses.

Friends’ research resulted in several significant changes to the Annex planning documents including an important clarification that a portion of the Annex, although protected in perpetuity as open space, is also zoned for Planned Development.  This is an inappropriate zoning classification which we will work to change.  Friends also brought to the City’s attention the mitigation measures in the Annex environmental document which were incorrect in that they still referenced the parking garage which had been taken out of the Master Plan after considerable public controversy.

We will work cooperatively with the Hahamongna Watch Group, the Arroyo Seco Foundation, the Spirit of the Sage Council, and other park advocacy groups as the City of Pasadena moves forward to implement the long-awaited Hahamongna Watershed Park Master Plan.  The plan is visionary in many aspects and deserves our support.  There are, however, indications that long-standing plans for roads and revenue generating structures have not died out entirely although they were taken out of the Master Plan after strong community opposition.  We will continue to monitor and report on these possible developments.

With this website, we plan to bring the community the information necessary to continue the two decade long struggle to keep Hahamongna a great natural open space so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we have.
